Makena Marangu Memorial Maternity Center

Answer Africa’s Legacy Mission

Answer Africa is now partnering with the non-profit organization Hearts Afire in continuing to serve the people of Kenya. Answer Africa will be working alongside the Hearts Afire international team to build a maternity wing at the Hearts Afire Mountain Hospital in honor and remembrance of Dr. Makena Marangu.

On August 7th, 2018, we officially broke ground on this prodigious project. This critically needed addition to the Hearts Afire Mountain Hospital will be named the “Makena Marangu Memorial Maternity Center.” Many generations of future Kenyan leaders will be born here, and every person who enters will be blessed by the Lord as they begin life in one of the most purpose-filled places in Kenya!

The Makena Marangu Memorial Maternity Center will provide state-of-the-art care and facilities to the people and families in the surrounding areas of Eldoret, Kenya, an area of approximately 10 million people. Our commitment is that this Maternity Center will continue to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Makena Marangu.

Nothing less than excellence will be used to spread God’s love and provision to the people of Eldoret, Kenya. The impact this maternity center will have will go on for generations in a ripple effect that will spread all across Kenya. We thank the Lord for the partnership, and more importantly, the friendship that we have found with Dr. Joe Pecoraro and his team at Hearts Afire. This is only the beginning of all the wonderful things God is doing through us all, and YOU are a deeply valued part of it all!”

How This Came To Be

A bit of history as to the relationship that has now come full circle, culminating into Answer Africa’s partnership with Hearts Afire and this Legacy Mission.

Dr. Makena Marangu began her surgical residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey (UMDMJ) in 1987. It was there that she and Dr. Joseph Pecoraro first met. They developed an immediate friendship and maintained that friendship throughout the completion of Dr. Marangu‘s residency training in Newark.

Even though they chose to ultimately practice medicine in different areas of the country, Dr. Pecoraro in Florida and Dr. Marangu in California, they continued to maintain their friendship throughout the years.

As each of them continued to grow their relationships with Jesus Christ this cemented their friendship at an even higher level despite the distance between them.

It was Dr. Marangu‘s Kenyan heritage that first connected Dr. Pecoraro to the nation of Kenya. His work there has continued over the years, and when Dr. Marangu went home to the Lord, this brought their relationship full circle.

The completion of the Makena Marangu Memorial Maternity Center built in union with Hearts Afire will be an everlasting memorial to their relationship and the love they both have for the Kenyan people.
